FLOW 2 - Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire
One of the key elements that make up a solid image is composition. Ironically it’s one of the areas that is most challenging to grasp because much of its magic is elusive and relies on personal preference. Yes there are ‘rules’, but they will only get you so far and you risk being to formulaic and dare I say clichéd… anyway, this image for me was all about flow. Starting at the top middle I attempted to frame the wonderful autumnal oranges with a foreground green tree. This pushes your eye down the tree to the river and then hopefully across the frame in a z to the bottom left of the shot. Your eye then (with the best intention and a little crossing of my fingers) swirls around the solitary rock and then back up the river (taking a moment to meander around the green mossy details, to rest back where we started. So the eyes movement has been moved around the image and hopefully had an enjoyable journey. Anyway the trick is to orchestrate this balanced eye flowing movement so the viewer doesn't feel too directed and if you manage to keep somebody’s attention long enough to add a few more moments of contemplation then it is my belief that you have created a strong composition…that’s the idea anyway!
